Review of How to Create a Portfolio and Get Hired: A Guide for Graphic Designers and Illustrators

With the final year of the Illustration course (BA Visual Communication) focusing so much on professional development and preparation for industry we decided Fig Talyor’s instructive book ‘

How to Create a Portfolio and Get Hired: A Guide for Graphic Designers and Illustrators’ would be an ideal choice for the L6 Core Reader, Its available through the publisher Lawrence King for £17.95 or from most good bookshops. It provides an insight into what students , graduates and professionals alike can do to enhance their chances of impressing at a portfolio interview.

Fig is a well established expert in this field and has been working for the AOI for over 30 years. She has been to BCU on many occasions often to specifically help with final year student portfolios. This book captures much of what she’s had to say and yet it seems to cover far more and in its own way becomes a sort of guide to the ever changing landscape that is professional illustration. There are chapters on new technology and its impact on the work place as well as insights from both professional illustrators and art editors as to what to expect.

This book is ideal for Graphic Designers as well as Animators and if you don’t buy any other book this Summer then make sure you buy this for the start of term.
